New tune and a mystery from Pete Yorn: "Shampoo"

Pete Yorn posted a new song to his MySpace page a week or two ago called "Shampoo" and I've been neglecting my Official Ambassador of Yorn duties in passing along the good news (I hope they don't, uh, fire me).

This track revisits some of the fantastic male/female harmonies (it's what made "The Man" the jam of my summer last year) with a vocalist that I swear I know. Who is that singing along with him? It's driving me a bit nuts trying to place her voice.

Of this delightful new confection, Pete said, “[There's a] batch that is ten songs that I'm just putting together that is kind of a concept record, based on a character from a movie that I like a lot. There's a character called George Roundie that Warren Beatty played in a film called Shampoo and all the songs seem to relate to his life or the character's life. And so it's a soundtrack, I made my own soundtrack to that movie I guess. I'll put that out at a later date.”

Shampoo - Pete Yorn

UPDATED:
I've gotten the following three bits of information about this song from a source quite close to Sir Yorn. He says:

a little more info. i will give you three items on which to chew:
1. the "george roundy" concept album went away.
2. the song "shampoo" is part of a completely different concept album which does exist and is finished.
3. there may or may not be more tantalizing information regarding this project but i am not at liberty to disperse it.

More tantalizing information. How mysterious. I can't wait.

I think it's hilarious that Pete loves "Shampoo" -- it's the story of a very very straight hairdresser (Warren Beatty) who romances women by doing their hair. It's a pretty cheesy movie, nice to know Mr. Yorn is a fan. Can't wait to hear more music inspired by the film...

Heather, Thanks for fulfilling your PY ambassador duties. :)
ps. speaking of shampoo and hair, the man himself has incredible locks. I wish there was a Denver/Boulder/Aspen/Vail/Breck/anycoloradocity headlining tour date this year...I'm at the verge of begging for one.

That sure sounds a lot more like Beth Orton than Liz Phair...but it's somehow NOT Beth Orton to my ears. Just sounds like her.

Is it Leona Naess? I don't think it's Minnie Driver, I just listened to something I had on my iTunes with her singing and....not quite it. It reminds me also a bit of the way Cat Power's voice is all creaky and smoky on that Velvet Underground cover. This is seriously driving me mad. Arrgh.

And we have a guess of Natalie Merchant, who I was thinking as well, but....I'm not 100% sure on that.

I loved Pete Yorn's last album. I was glad to see that it made Paste's Top 25 of 2006 list.

After landing the co-starring role in the For Us video, Sophie sent Pete a demo hoping to further her career in the music business and to his surprise, she was amazing in the studio.

I THINK IT'S ZOOEY DESCHANEL. I don't know why I'm yelling. But I am pretty sure. Think of the Elf duet.

;)

(I can't believe I've left three comments on this, my own post)

Okay. This is a great song. Finally convinced me to give Pete Yorn another try (my local station overplayed strange condition and Life on a Chain). Now, I'm a fan. I know, I know, it's about time! Just bought two albums off of itunes. Thanks Heather.

PS> I vote for Leona Naess, too.

Yeah, I love the scene where the chick's husband comes home and busts in and Warren Beatty starts fussing with her hair and acting all flamboyant, so the husband will think he's just a gay hairdresser that came over to do her hair, not some guy banging his wife. That was some funny shit. But it WAS definitely an ULTRA cheesy movie.

What about Scarlett Johasson? She just released her first album.

I'd say her or Zoey D. They both have that throw back sound

It's 100% Scarlett Johansson. Pete and her put an album together. Yhe link is to their new song Relator.

Yes, after listening to his new song with Scarlett Johansson, I think it's her. Whoever said (with certainty)the chick from Dixie Chicks is quite a bit off, it sounds nothing like her. He did do a song with her in the past called "The Man" but I have no idea how anyone could listen to Shampoo and get Natalie Maines out of it.
