Bob Odenkirk's Director's Cut of the new Rogue Wave video: "Chicago x12"
In a strongly-worded missive over on his MySpace, comedic writer/filmmaker Bob Odenkirk gets all feisty and legally threatening about his new video for Rogue Wave's "Chicago x12." After first assuming "Wow, this guy's a serious jerk, " now after watching the video I kinda think, "Wow, this is a brilliant bit of marketing." You be the judge:

With the cutout cardboard figures parading around Reseda, the surreal nature of the Director's Cut version actually suits the imaginative feeling of the song pretty well. And then there's the karate dude that we're not sure what to do with. A catchy song off a rather majestic album nonetheless.

Watch for the band's version of the video to be released in the coming weeks. Oh, it's on.

Brilliant vid! (Although their confusion of the written "whose" and "who's" irritates me no end).
Gotta be a joke, particularly one involving a targeted marketing persona for the gig -- did you catch Odenkirk's carefully selected friends list?
This is Bob Odenkirk. In other words, yeah, it's a joke. :) Not a doubt in my mind. Good stuff.

Rogue Wave mentioned the video in concert and said it was weird having Odenkirk direct the video, since the song is intended to be sad and in no way funny. I'll be interested to see the real video.
Odenkirk is as off-beat as he is hysterical. For a good introduction to him, I'd recommend Sarah Silverman's standup special "Jesus is Magic" where he plays the role of her manager. Genius. The letter on his myspace is right in line...
To Heather - you rock my world. I just discovered your blog today (I'm a Jeff Buckley fanatic and was stoked to see you had the whole St. Ann's show up) and am instantly a believer. I hate it when people who claim to be music fans regurgitate the false claim that "... no one makes good music anymore." I whole-heartedly believe those people just don't know where to look. Like your blog ; )

Always good to see more of Rogue Wave, but I think the video does not mesh with the songs message very well.
Heather, do you know if there is a version of Rogue Wave playing Neil Young's "Birds" floating around the net. I saw them at the fillmore and would love to find a copy of that song.

This is great! If you really like Bob Odenkirk, track down the DVD of the old 90's Ben Stiller show and look for "Where's Manson". Bob replaces Lacie with Charles Manson. It still holds up (unlike the rest of the Ben Stiller Show.)
I meant Lassie the dog from that old 50's show. Sorry... I waited 2 hours in line to see Rogue Wave at SXSW this year and I didn't get in. I sat outside the tent where they played though. It was worth the wait.
yeah wow i guess if you don't know and respect Odenkirk then, yeah wow i guess you might not like this but, WOW.
(didn't think it was that hard to "get" anyway, i mean i had to look in the liner notes to find out what the F he was saying too)
I would hardly call 'Asleep at Heaven's Gate' majestic. I consider it to be one of the most disappointing albums of last year.
Interesting publicity stunt, nonetheless.
