all this life is ash wednesday
Even though I've never given up anything for Lent in my life, I obviously couldn't let this day pass without posting the great Elvis Perkins song (from the 2007 album of the same name) that pays tribute to it in rather stark form. Dude's seen a lot in his life, and you can hear it in the songs. Last year someone commented that they were trying to give up my blog for Lent, but the Monday Music Roundup cracked them and they buckled, they clicked. It's hard, I know. What are you giving up for Lent, if anything? Let me know so I can enjoy it on your behalf and write about it.
Ash Wednesday - Elvis Perkins
Also, speaking of not denying yourself the good fruits of this world, how about Pearl Jam headlining Bonnaroo with My Morning Jacket, Plant & Krauss, The Raconteurs and more? Tennessee beckons.

What a beautiful tune. Just bought the album on iTunes.
I've actually been practicing fasting and abstinence today, after my mum reminded me last night. A touch hypocritical perhaps, but every time I go to take some sweeties from the back office I feel guilty. It's Chinese New Year tomorrow, right? So I can have some prawn fried rice on my way home?
* just wrote about lent. giving up gorging myself with food after i'm full and trying to add on actually caring about people in times other than when it's convenient to me...yeah. sounds lame but reminds me how insensitive and uncaring i can be.
Great tune. This year I'm giving up meat, fried foods, and alcohol - it's gonna be a long 40 days.
My 8 year old daughter decided to give up salt on her eggs. Go figure.
I'm gonna try to give up griping about my job and turn all that negative energy into positive, then use it to look really hard for a new gig someplace that better suits my personality.
I'm going to take up smoking and then give that up.
I'm definitely giving up chocolate, and I'm going to give a no sugar diet a try. We'll see how long that lasts. Otherwise, I'm going to start volunteering at a soup kitchen. It's time I take some of the focus off myself, right?
The whole family has decided to give up things for the first time.
Kids - boy (8) is giving up ice cream, girl (6) is giving up suckers. I'm giving up cookies (my achilles heel), cake, and ice cream. And my wife is giving up chips (her achilles heel.)
hcjoel! quitting smoking is one of the hardest things you can do.
here's a dollar.
french fries. fast food. meals after 10 pm. an extra ice cube for my wild turkey. cock fighting. muttering about fare collectors.
I've given up coffee, and yes, I am very tired.
Awesome. I wrote a blog about giving up myself, so for an explanation...I would say just read my blog about it! Great album though.
I gave up being sarcastic. I am very happy to report my tremendous amount of willpower lasted me all of about 8 hours. Isn't that fantastic? Yay for passive aggressive sarcasm!! :)
I was the one who wrote in that they were giving up all music blogs for lent. I am doing that again which explains why this comment is not coming in until Sunday, the day of rest. Thank God for Sundays!
