Holy leaked Pearl Jam demos, Batman!

Recently a cool little Pearl Jam promotional CD which circulated during the production of Lost Dogs made its way to my ears, and I am beyond excited. It's a loose assemblage of demo versions and rough mixes of Pearl Jam songs from over the years, with the occasional live cut tossed in. A couple of these songs have never been heard before by John & Susie Q. Superfan (including me), while others were tunes that I have on various cassette tapes (like this KISW performance of Bee Girl, the alternate version of Alone, or Just A Girl) but haven't dug out or heard in years.

When something is a great find, my innards shake a little while I am downloading them. This was an innard-shaker.

Anything In Between (unreleased, Binaural outtake, 1999)
In The Moonlight (rough mix, Binaural outtake, 1999)
Fatal (rough mix, Binaural outtake, 1999)
Sad (a.k.a. Letter to the Dead, rough mix, Binaural outtake, 2000)
Wishing Well (live) (written by The Free, Mookie Blaylock, 1990)
Hitchhikers (rough mix, Binaural outtake, 1999)
Puzzle And Game (unreleased, vastly different demo of "Light Years", Binaural outtake, 2000)
Education (rough mix, Binaural outtake, 1999)
Sweet Lew (rough mix, Yield outtake, 1997)
Sunburn (unreleased, w/ Stone on vocals, No Code outtake, 1995)
Hold On (rough mix, Ten outtake, 1991)
(Just A) Girl (rough mix, Ten outtake, 1990)
Alone (rough mix, lyrics differ from Lost Dogs version, Ten outtake, 1991)
Brother (rough mix w/ different vocals, Ten outtake, 1990)
Don't Gimme No Lip (rough mix, No Code outtake, 1996)
Bee Girl (on Rockline, KISW FM, Seattle, 10/18/1993)
Against The '70s (From Mike Watt album 'Ball-Hog or Tugboat?', 1995)
"New" Jeremy (live version from Red Rocks, CO, 06/20/1995)

ZIP UP THE PEARL JAM DELICIOUSNESS

Also, for those baseball fans out there (I can't talk about the Giants this year, it's too painful) Ed's gonna be singing at the Cubbies game this Friday. Now that's my kind of seventh inning stretch.

Thanks so much for posting this! I've had a vast majority of these tracks on cassette tape at one time or another, but never in an entire collection. I have downloaded, burned and am calling my cd "Lost Cats".

Me-ow!

What an amazing post, this is going to have to console me for not getting tickets to the Vic Theatre tomorrow night! I had about half of these songs before but there are quite a few in here that are new for me and I'm loving it. Just like "cowbell" we always need more PJ - thank you!!!

YB, it was already out there, I didn't personally leak it...and you can't buy it, it's highly unlikely it would ever be commercially available. Just wanted to say that. Thanks!

YB - this was an Internal Promo.

FWIW, posting commercially UNavailable tracks would be kosher, but nothing to the contrary (just short of an official imprimatur).

I Just listened to this at work today and it literally made my week. Sometimes I find myself wishing that PJ would follow their first instincts on songs. These rough mixes are amazing, and it shows that some of the final versions would have benefitted from less studio tinkering. Thanks again.

Heather, is hero too strong of a word to describe you right now?

Does anyone know more background about these songs? Does the band want these out there?

Branden, I would say the band wouldn't mind at all, for several reasons. First, as I understand it, this was a promo CD created by Sony, hopefully with the OK of someone at PJ HQ. Second, most of the songs are rough mixes of songs that made Lost Dogs. Others, like the live Bee Girl, Brother, and the "new" Jeremy, have been available on various bootlegs for years.

I always read that the band, particularly Ed, was sensitive about "Brother" for some reason - there's some reason why the version on Lost Dogs doesn't have vocals. Anyone know the details?

I guess I'll answer my own question:

Brother" (instrumental): An early candidate for "Ten," having made it as far as the rough mix of the album sent to Epic executives. The song disappeared from the Pearl Jam canon shortly thereafter and is presented here as an instrumental.

McCready: Well, "Brother" was a big point of contention between [guitarist] Stone [Gossard] and [bassist] Jeff [Ament]. I remember Jeff really loving it and Stone either not liking it or being indifferent about it. Jeff and Stone were arguing a lot about this song and were kind of mad at each other. Jeff got so pissed he went off and started dunking basketballs. It was like, "What's up, dude?" He got really pissed. He related this story to me recently.

It was the typical Stone goes one way/Jeff goes the other. That is just how they work. They have been together forever and the dynamic between the two of them makes things work. There was a big, heated argument. But I thought it was a cool song with a cool vibe. It may have been an example of mid-tempo-itis. I recall the big argument between the two. Jeff said it was almost like he was going to quit. It was serious sh*t. When it came back up recently, they didn't argue, but it was kind of a reliving in a way smaller way. Stone was still not into it. Ed didn't really like the original lyrics. He was like, "Hey man, if you want, go in and put some guitar stuff on it." I didn't have really any idea what to do, but I went down and listened to it and thought I'd do some Brian May-style layered guitars on it. I guess this is a final chapter and a lyrical burial.

Heather, you so rok! thanks for this amazing post. IT is going to be a great soundtrack for my beach hosue in the Outer Banks next week.
any thoughts on the "Live at the Gorge" Box set? I really love it: the set lists are fantastic and the sound quality is superior to many of the other "bootleg" releases. A little skimpy on the art work, though.
just curious what u thought.
anyway, thanks again for this post, and all the other ones that so often so brighten my day !

Hey Heather,

THANK YOU for posting this! I've had most of these (in poor condition) and it's great to get some cleaned up versions. And, I actually prefer the "altered" versions found here to the originals, Education in particular. I was not a fan of that song, lovin' this alternate cut.

And the crown jewel for me - a CLEAN PUZZLES & GAMES! YAY YAY YAY! (Oh, how I wish this was the Binaural release!)

Well, enough of the gushing. Again - THANK YOU!

"Against The 70s" is a Mike Watt song that Eddie Vedder sang and played some guitar on. It's on Mike Watt's "Ball-Hog or Tugboat?" album.
