Your '90s Nostalgia summer tour
Counting Crows is heading out on the road this summer in support of their new album coming out this fall, which is in the mixing stages at the moment. They will be reprising their double bill with Live -- I saw this same pairing on the tour for This Desert Life at the Greek Theatre in Berkeley, and that was just when Ed Kowalczyk was hitting his full rap-rock stride (complete with crotch-gesturing, which he has now perfected into a veritable art form).It was actually a really good show (I remember Adam running out on stage to sing with Ed on "Dolphin's Cry" and I think Ed returned the favor during the Crows' set as well). If they announce another leg of this tour (nothing this far West yet) I will probably go if it isn't too expensive.
You know I love Counting Crows, and have never really grown tired of Live. I absolutely wore out their Throwing Copper album in high school, and even though Secret Samadhi was a little uneven, they struck gold again my book with The Distance To Here. I just love their strong and soaring, melodic-rock sound.
Collective Soul and Third Eye Blind will also be joining the tour for most dates. I don't especially ascribe to either of these groups (which is why I only have covers from them to post below), but allegedly the lead singer of 3EB is a foxy, foxy man in concert. Duritz writes, "What you may not know is that on Saturday, May 21st, 1994, Third Eye Blind played their 1st show ever, opening for Counting Crows at the historic Fillmore Auditorium in San Francisco. We've never toured with Collective Soul before, but we've played festivals together and...well, they're just a great band."
The tour will be hitting minor-league ballparks across the nation in smaller towns and communities (speaking of which - I am going to a Colorado Sky Sox game tomorrow on a package with free food and free beer until the 7th inning . . . no better way to spend Memorial Day? ). This is an interesting idea for a tour -- and just in case there was any lingering question who the primary audience now is for Counting Crows, children under 12 are free at all shows on this tour. Ha.

Sounds coool, hopefully I can check out their August 15th show in Frederick, MD. Collective Soul are really great live band, you should check them out sometime. Heck, maybe this tour. ;)
Just wanted to fill in some concert info. Hootie and the blowfish will open up for Counting Crows (and only Counting Crows) on August 27th and August 28th.
Third Eye Blind will play in place of Live on August 7, 8, and 11.
I would expect a second, Counting Crows only tour in the fall/winter to support their new Album Saturday Nights Sunday Mornings, which is "supposed" to be released sometime late this year.

Four out of four of my favourite 90s bands...am looking forward to a follow-up review on this one. This is great, even though I'm stuck all the way on a tiny island in Southeast Asia!
I saw Live again last fall, after more than a few times in their heyday - went to Denny's with Ed after a pre-Copper show :) Distance to Here is great! They can still do it loud and powerful...

This show is my version of hell. Adam Duritz is utterly insufferable.
Interesting tour. I wouldn't see it but glad that the bands are persevering.
Semi-charmed Life era Third Eye Blind is stamped in my memory from listening to the radio in SF in 1997. But their best work was on the next album, Blue. Wounded is the stand-out track lyrically and musically, but it was released after the record and the band lost momentum. I couldn't find a good version on the web, but hope you find it at some point.

This is a show I would definitely go to and never tell a single soul. I've never seen the Counting Crows live, but I've seen Live plenty of times--once they started charging more than 15$ for a ticket (I once saw a Lush, Weezer, Live triple bill at an amusement park in RI and the 20$ ticket included an all-day ride pass!) I vowed never to pay more than 25 bucks for a ticket.
Luckily, I keep stumbling into free tickets to see them each time they come around.
3EB is a guilty pleasure--I was actually just listening to Jumper yesterday and wailing along with it on a drive back from the Badlands.
Collective Soul can DIAF, in my opinion. I have never heard a band trade on the exact same chord progression so much. I hope they hit Red Rocks this summah--should complement the Dylan show quite nicely.

Of the four, Collective Soul is the only one I've seen - opening for Aerosmith when they were touring for "Get a Grip." They suuuuucked (CS, not Aerosmith).
I then met them at a hotel here in the Springs right after high school. They're quite possibly the gayest. band. ever. Really nice guys though, they offered me and all my friends tickets to their show the next night. Since they sucked the time before, I turned them down, but my future wife went.
