U2: "Took you down a dead end street / Mixing the bitter with the sweet"

I spent at least a good hour+ last night watching Zoo TV tour footage on YouTube from U2, and then I open my email this morning to find that Cara has fantastically read my mind with this little outtake snippet gem from that era, off an obscure promo cd:

Two Shots of Happy, One Shot of Sad (Airplane Version) - Bono

I missed the Zoo TV tour (look at this opener! Music starts at 4:15 after the video sensory overload, and what a song, with those grinding, excoriating guitar licks) . . .

. . . But I caught the PopMart one in '97, a tour that which usually started each show with the insanely awesome song 'Mofo', and the effortlessly cool 4 strutting their way in through cadres of adoring fans in fine swaggering fashion. I do find myself loving the excess of that whole 5-year era:

Popmart was my first time seeing U2, but my love for Zoo TV-era Bono knows no bounds. If you haven't checked out the Zoo TV Sydney DVD that was released in the fall, I highly recommend it. I think most of it is up on YouTube now, but it's so much better on DVD.

This blog has that entire promo CD available (it's down near the bottom of the page), along with a lot of great shows: http://www.u2-thespiralstaircase.blogspot.com/

I don't care what all the indie hipster kids say, these days: U2 is the tightest band of all-time and there is no sight more badass than Edge strutting down the aisle with his cowboy hat and '70s mustache. I adore the '90s U2. Sadly, my first concert was only this past Vertigo tour. (Though, it was in Dublin, so that's got to count for something!)

Also, kudos to you, Heather. I constantly see music blogs trashing U2, particularly Bono, these days. It's nice to see a little appreciation for a change.

Even though Pop wasn't nearly the album Achtung Baby was, the Popmart tour was really a good extension of the whole Zoo TV/Outside Broadcast tours. i mean, that monster screen, the McDonald's rip-off arches, and the lemon. The Freaking Lemon!!

Totally Awesome!

The Edge's guitar has a vocal line all of its own.Its subtlety elevating and underscoring the hype - it plays in your soul - it has a mainline to where hope lives.Thankyou Mr. Edge!

And marc, the lemon WAS cool. When it opened. How does that not make one chuckle, to picture U2 stuck in a lemon?

hi heatha..
i was lucky enough to be on board the U2 train early. i caught the 84 worcester show, and then many many shows since then....

speaking of ZOO TV... i also had the need to hear some, so appropriately enough i listened to boston 92 st pats day (which i also was lucky enough to go to) and i also found a dvd of that show on u2torrents. so it was a zoo week for me.

i just got through with the pop era, as my wife got me the new pimm, concert documentary book and i read up on the popmart tour. so of course i had to dig out a bunch of those shows as well.

now im caught up in elevation shows... so im getting my fill of those at the moment.
