Monday night: Coldplay at Brixton Academy

On Monday night, the eve of the North American release date for their new album, Coldplay performed a free concert at Brixton Academy in London which was broadcast on Radio 1. They performed seven of their new songs off Viva La Vida (whilst getting good art into the collective public consciousness). Many of the new songs seem to possess a sweet air to them, unvarnished but still epic in this setting. Have a listen:

COLDPLAY
Live at Brixton Academy 6/16/08
Intro
Life in Technicolour
Violet Hill
Clocks
In My Place
Viva la Vida
Chinese Sleep Chant
God Put A Smile Upon Your Face
42
Square One
Trouble
Lost!
Strawberry Swing
Interlude
Yellow
Death Will Never Conquer (The Goldrush cover)
Fix You
Lovers in Japan

ZIP: COLDPLAY AT BRIXTON

And is it just me or does Chris Martin move more and more like Bono every day, especially in that iTunes commercial? Yeah.

thanks a lot for posting this, heather! it's just beautiful. especially when the coldplay concert tickets aren't affordable at all anymore. :( at least they still make great music (although that's probably open to dispute, but I love it)!

No, it's not just you. I've been noticing Chris Martin's emulation of Bono for quite a while now. He really seems to be trying to position the band as the next U2. He even wears jackets that look similar to what Bono wears (see the cover of the new Rolling Stone).

It's actually kinda soured me on Coldplay. I was a big fan back before Yellow caught on. Listen also to the live version of Yellow on their live CD. The intro reminds an awful lot of "Where the Streets have No Name."

I've always been a massive U2 fan and what strikes me as blatant rip-off just leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

Chris Martin clearly wants to be the next Bono, he even gushes about U2 constantly in interviews. It can be slightly charming when he talks about them, but he really does go too far- dresses like Bono, picks up political causes like Bono, even tries to make Coldplay songs sound like U2 (to their detriment- they have gone way downhill since "Rush of Blood..."). They even pilfered U2's producer for their latest album!

Coldplay will never be the next U2, they have already too firmly established themselves as a band that follows the lead of others before them (U2, Radiohead, Blur, Travis)

Although I love their first two albums, Coldplay has become kind of a joke to me. It's sad, really. They're trying way too hard, probably in large part b/c of pressure from their label, but the U2-emulating is a bit much for me.

Listening to this show, the part that really stood out to me was when Chris did a fantastic segue from Square One --> Trouble, then fucked it up by stopping and telling the audience how great it was, and adding some stupid anecdote. Seriously? Pulling stunts like that is why some people think he's a douche, myself included.
