Paul Westerberg & Replacements: B-Sides, Live Stuff, Non-Album Tracks & Rarities

Sometimes in this world someone takes time to do something nice simply out of the goodness of their heart. Recently, Friendly Guy Jerry took the time to make and mail me two CDs jam-packed with some great rarities, b-sides, live cuts, and non-album tracks from some of my favorite rough rockers Paul Westerberg & The Replacements. Why? Just because.

Now I share my largesse with you. Both are in zip format, and there are some real standouts here (and tons of covers, which I find fascinating to see how they put their own stamp on such a wide variety of influences). And thanks to Dean for filling in some of the provenance blanks.

PAUL WESTERBERG RARITIES DISC

Waiting for Somebody (Singles soundtrack)
Seein' Her (b-side of Knockin' on Mine)

What a great way to start the weekend. Bring out the sloppy raw rawk.

Oh! And this reminds me of a great book I read a bit back: Our Band Could Be Your Life: Scenes from the American Indie Underground 1981-1991, by Michael Azerrad. Excellent chapter on The Replacements.

Thanks for sharing these. I have a number of the 'Mats tracks on various comps I found in dingy, old record stores. But there are plenty I've never heard.

Thanks again!

Singles is probably my all time favourite films, well ok one of them, I had to survive on a cassette copy of the soundtrack for about 5 years until i tracked down the CD which they deleted in the UK after about 3 copies were sold. We'll always go dancing right?

Those Westerberg live tracks are better than I expected. I say "better" just because I've heard other concert footage from him that was kind of flat, but that's not the case here.

I hope most or all of the rarities are remastered for the rumored box set. Thanks for posting these!

One note - "20th Century" is, of course, "20th Century Boy", a cover of the T-Rex song.

Thanks for the post! Great way to start my new year! But the Azerrad book, while good in many ways, does a disservice to Mats fans. It implies, rather directly, that Paul abandoned Bobby Stinson when Bobby tried to clean up his act (quoting a Spin magazine article that Paul has openly denied.) And also imply that when the Mats went to a major label they stopped making good music (basically anything after Let It Be.) and that's clearly not true at all as the next two albums are what made their repuation. but that didn't fit in with the thesis of the book, so got ignored.

Very nice songs. Is there any info about these songs origins or dates? All I could find was possible outtake session listings from http://www.cros.net/chazz/rare/TheReplacements.htm

At January 02, 2007 7:50 PM, Blogger heather said...

hi ffolke, thanks. No, I really don't have much info at all about these tracks, although if someone had any definitive dates or session info, I'd add it to the post. Really, I just have the songs which someone sent to me on CD.

Wow, this is a colossal treasure trove. Thanks so much for posting and then re-posting. I miss hearing these guys on the radio. I wish radio didn't suck. But I'm getting off track. Thanks again. That said, among the Replacements tracks, mp3s for "Hey Good Lookin" and "Tossin and Turnin" are missing, at least for those of us who have to download one track at a time.

bless you heather! i also had a bunch of this stuff but there were songs i had never heard before! and i thought i heard everything. i still think "kissing in action" is one of the best replacement songs ever made- thank you for giving me an mp3. i'm sure the song never made it to an album because it sounds too bubblegummy and paul prob hates it, but it still sends goosebumps down my spine when i hear the opening riff, a riff to rival some of keef's best for the stones. thanks, john from lancaster, pa
